Ah, I see. What was your opinion of the M4, reliability-wise? I have an AR but since it's never seen battlefield conditions, I can't really judge the system's reliability. I'm a bit of a firearms enthusiast, so I always make it a point to ask veterans how satisfied they were with their rifles. Thanks for serving, BTW.

IMO it's quite good. It's not the same M-16 platform that was plagued with problems decades ago. It was easy enough to maintain in desert conditions, just a matter of making it a routine to wipe down the internals regularly. Personally, converting them to piston-operated v. gas-operated will make them more reliable by preventing carbon build-up in the receiver as they do in their current configuration. The accuracy is quite good at short ranges, typical of a carbine like this. Anyone wanting consistently tight groups at 300 meters needs a rifle instead (20in. or longer barrel).
Thanks! I think in addition to the gas-piston retrofit someone should make a design that incorporates some sort of channels in the receiver for getting dust and debris away from the bolt carrier. This would solve the reliability issues associated with tight tolerances in my opinion.

Interesting, something like the bolt on a Sterling SMG?
The main issue will still be the ejection port leaving plenty of access for material to enter the receiver, then building up on the locking lugs of the bolt and chamber. I like your thinking though.
I've only seen pictures of the Sterling bolt, to be honest. I've heard of problems with the locking lugs, apparently they sometimes unlock a bit while stripping off the next cartridge and don't engage fully, and sometimes they have trouble disengaging. I think it's a needlessly restrictive system that needs to be simplified. But I think that the with the next-gen rifles like the FN Scar and now the Magpul Masade, the rifle will be replaced altogether rather than fixed. A vietnam vet once said "The best way to fix the AR-15 is to remove the front sight post and put a new rifle under it."

The main problem with the lugs is usually attributed to fouling; either from carbon build-up, or just poor maintenance. The platform has been around for a long time and is still quite good, much like the AK system. But IMO it is time for something to replace it. Something with the simplicity and reliability of the AK, but maintaining the AR's accuracy. Replacing the 5.56 with a round with more impact like the 6.8 Grendel would be a vast improvement.
